Greeks, God, and a Garden All in One

The Digital Journalism class under the guidance of Professor David Silver, had the privileged opportunity of meeting and hearing the very wise words of Prof. Tom Lucas, S.J. He is the mastermind behind the garden within the unknown grounds of Loyola house at USF. "California mediterranean meets classic design, said Lucas." The beauty that lies within the soil of what the human eye cannot see gives way to what can be seen, while making room for individuals to enjoy the earth's atmosphere. Lucas said, he just wanted to go out into the garden and get fresh air, all of a sudden he fell in love with it.

This secret garden unlike no other at USF captures a true essence of time. Lucas connected the garden to the private gardens of the greeks, in which no one but the greeks of elite ranks were allowed to enjoy the natural pleasures of gardens. Now, people of all economic backgrounds can engage in the beauty that gardens posses. However, gardens are not always viewed as a place of serenity. In some religious aspects, the natural world is seen as a place of danger, said Lucas. Nonetheless, the garden grows in such a way that allows one to know that God is everywhere, said Lucas.
